'tism lens

More disabled than you think

I grew up 'odd', with learning delays. I grew up with chronic tick syndrome, which is for me an involuntary muscular tick where most of my muscles all over my body activate and deactivate at once, a muscle pulse in a fraction of a second. It rarely occurs when I'm concentrating, so I'm safe to operate machinery. Outside of concentration it can be quite dramatic; historically I've inadvertently yeeted various objects around. As I'm in I.T., this has often been the mouse which has been smacked against the keyboard then gone ballistic half way across the room. It has also been drinks, which is horrifying when said drink contains alcohol - mourn for the loss.

It was largely ignored when I was a child, and through school, early employment it was a 'funny quirk'. I'd seen good doctors about this who thought it was a 'mild' form of Tourettes. I now know it's a bundle deal which came free with the 'tism. It's a side effect of living constantly on the edge of autistic burn out, one bit of trivial stress would result in my body, driven by my itchy brain having a shock! Since I've been diagnosed autistic and allowed myself, given myself permission to cope and put in mitigations for the 'tism, since then I've hardly had any instances of the tick / twitch. It is however useful for me, as if I start to experience them again, I know that life needs to back the fuck off for a while - it's my itchy brain signalling in its non-verbal way that I'm too close to the edge again.

Every neurotypical who has witnessed one or more of the instance of twitching has either laughed or reacted with horror; apparently the 'faces' I make when it happens are quite funny. Still it rumbled on through my life from early childhood until now, in my 50s. Yes I feel disappointed by the care I didn't, but should have received. I feel disappointed by my parents, relatives, people around me as a child who should have taken care, and yes I'm resentful to the lot of 'em. I'm more disabled than I ever imagined, and when looking through the 'tism lens it's horrific what I've endured through life at the hands of an uncaring and ignorant society. It's a good thing that the 'tism is becoming more prominent and people are looking after each other now; it's a crying fucking shame that this wasn't always the way.
